STEPHEN MARLEY; SINGER/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER

Stephen Marley: Reggae Singer/Songwriter/Music Producer

The 5 time Grammy winner has just released his much anticipated 2nd studio Album,
REVALATION PART: 1 THE ROOT OF LIFE out 5/23/2011. His single “No Cigarette Smoke (In My Room)” featuring Melanie Fiona was released early March 2011, and is included on the album.

Born in Delaware and raised in Kingston Jamaica; Stephen Robert Nesta "Raggamuffin" Marley, the 4th child of Bob Marley has primarily been involved in the production side of the music business for many years. He produced brother Damian (Jr. Gong) 3 solo albums and brother Julian, and was the executive producer on the Bob Marley 1999 album CHANT DOWN BABYLON.

Stephens debut album MIND CONTROL, out in 2007 won a 2008 Grammy, and again he won a Grammy for the same album in 2010 titled MIND CONTROL, Acoustic. A great album if you like the reggae style of Bob Marley. Stephen is old school reggae, and his phraseology, and tonal formation, could easily be mistaken for the late, great Bob Marley himself. Of all the Marley boys in the business, he is the one most likely to keep the traditional Reggae sound alive. He remains in the background as music producer, but hopefully he will continue to release new material to keep us coming back for more.

He was a member of “Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers” with his siblings: Ziggy (David), and sisters Sharon & sister Cedella, and he and Brother Damien (Jr. Gong) performed and recorded as the “Marley Boyz”. He is a guest performer on numerous songs by other artist albums as well as making personal appearances, but nothing can compare to his riveting live performance as a solo artist.

Like his father he sings about social strife and injustice to the reggae beat. If you are a Bob Marley or Stephan Marley fan, this CD is a must have. It features: Waled, The cast of FELA, Capitan, Damian Jr. Gong Marley, Ziggy Marley, Spragga Benz, and Melania Fiona for a successful mix or reggae beats, sure to get your toe tapping. Revelation Part 2 is to be released later this year, or when he gets around to it..

DISPATCH - INDEPENDENT GROUP

Dispatch – American Independent Group

The group just released DISPATCH – EP,  May 17,2011, which include 6 songs. In January 2011 they announced that they will be re-reuniting for a tour beginning in June.

The band: Chad “Chetro” Urmston,(Currently the front man for State Radio) Brad “Braddigan” Corrigan and Pete “Repete” Heimbold, (both pursuing solo careers) started out in 1996, and disbanded in 2002 after recording 4 studio albums.

They have been called “The band that redefined independent music history”, because of sales and popularity. Their farewell show pulled in over 100 thousand people, who came from all over the world to pay tribute to this group.

In 2007 they came back together at Madison Square Garden for a benefit concert for charities in Zimbabwe, and the Elias Fund, and various other charities. They planned one show but sold out 3 for this event. In 2009 at the Kennedy Center they performed an acoustic show to benefit Zimbabwe, which the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe was in attendance, and another sold-out performance.

The band was instrumental in establishing The Elias Fund: “The Elias Fund began with a simple purpose - help ONE man raise his children. Today we EMPOWER Zimbabwean communities to build a promising future for their children through poverty alleviation”.

They have come together several times for fund raising events, and after 10 years released their new music on this EP, and announced they will be promoting it on tour this summer.  Additionally, the band announced that “A portion of all ticket proceeds will go towards education programs in local communities”.

Dispatch is somewhat like the “Bare Naked Ladies” style, with acoustic pop and folk rock, but also a little reggae and funk. The EP has a good mix of their style, and you will be pleasantly surprised if you have not heard them before. After the release of the EP, within hours it went to the #2 spot on iTunes. This band is no doubt a favorite and has a huge fan base to prove it. Check them out for yourself, and help support the charities they hold in high regard.

THE LONELY ISLAND: MUSICAL COMEDY TRIO

The Lonely Island: Comedy

Just out May 10, 2011 the second studio album of the Lonely Island, direct from Saturday Night live comes TURTLENECK AND CHAINS. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer & Jorma Taccone make up this trio, whose rendition of hip-hop and pop music infuses comedy on just about every subject you can image.

They add into the mix famous artist to help pull-off this crazy musical comedy.  “I Just Had Sex” feat. Akon, “Jack Sparrow” feat. Michael Bolton, Turtleneck and Chains” feat. Snoop Dog, "Shy Ronnie2: Ronnie & Clyde" feat. Rihanna,Motherlover” feat. Justin Timerberlale, “The Creep” feat. Nicki Minaj. As with the previous album the videos are the hit on youtube, and their popularity range from 1+ M - 50+ million hits per video. Watching the video’s you get a good idea what it is all about. It made sense, if that is possible. They are performers, who actually sing and do stand –up comedy at the same time. Amazing!

Their first album INCREDIBAD , out in February 2009, included tracks that were first seen/heard on SLN Live. The second album includes only 3 tracks previously performed on SLN Live! They stressed because they had take the time to actually sit down and write the music and make it funny at the same time for the deliberate debut of their 2nd album. The first album evolved because of the writers strike. It was something to do, while waiting the settlement. They lean toward the hip hop/pop and R&B genre because it suites their personal lyrical and musical taste.  You will understand their methodology when you see and hear the performance.

The Lonely Island comedic music probably won’t live to infinity and beyond, but it can be enjoyed for what it is at the moment. It is explicit, but you can still laugh at what they are trying to do, and if you are a Saturday Night Live fan, you will get it. Some of it is outrageous!

Not sure you will want to buy the songs, when you can watch the video’s on youtube for free?

BOOKER T. JONES: MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER/ARRANGER

Booker T. Jones: Multi-instrumentalist/ Songwriter/ Producer/Arranger/ Vocalist

The front man for Booker T. & The MGs, has released his 4th solo studio album.

THE ROAD FROM MEMPHIS, May 10, 2011. At age 66, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Life Time Achievement Grammy Winner is keeping his keyboards fine tuned with this new album.

It is a mix of hypnotic sounds, melodies, rhythms, and a little jazz infused into a timeless contemporary soul/funk album. It is refreshing when everything out there today seems to sound like something you have heard before in one form or another.

Jones has the Hammond B3 fired up, singing, purring, and moaning like a fine tuned engine. He has help from Lou Reed, Jim James, Matt Berninger, Yim Yames and Sharon Jones with vocals on the album, and even Booker T. contributes his vocals as a soloist and background.

While still in high school he co-wrote “Green Onion, which still sounds contemporary today some 50 years later. He would have been assured a job as a studio musician right out of school because he was such an accomplished artist by that time already, but he gave it all up to go to college in Indiana. He says it made him a better player, and a deeper listener, studying music from around the world.

He is an accomplished musician on the Piano, Oboe, Saxophone, Trombone and the infamous B3 Hammond Organ. He records with many artists who hold him in high regard, as arranger, producer and performing musician. He is sometimes associated with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Stephen Stills, Otis Redding, Drive By Truckers, The Mar-Keys, Rancid and last but not least the MGs.

Take a trip with Booker T, and enjoy the ride on the B3.

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS: SINGER/SONGWRITER/GUITAR

Sam John Lightnin’ Hopkins: Singer/Songwriter/Guitar

Now available on iTunes out February 2011 BLUES LEGEND, a must have for the hardcore blues collector. This traditional blues album is the heart and soul of a blues guitar man out of Texas. Rolling Stone magazine has included Lightnin’ Hopkins at the number 71 slot on their list of the 100 greatest guitarist of all time.

He is credited with approximately 800-1000 original recorded songs, and was known to have put out two albums a year nearing 80-90 in total. Lightnin’ Hopkins has been gone 29 years, but since his death in 1982 at the age 69, nine albums have come out honoring his music. The guy was a music machine, if there ever was one.

The country blues man had a unique fingerstyle of playing the guitar. He would play bass, rhythm, lead and percussion and sing at the same time. He played both “alternating” and “monotonic” bass styles, at the same time he was creative with the turnarounds in which he could stretch out a single note lead line, while tapping the guitar or his leg for added rhythm.

His story is long and detailed, but growing up in the south his songs reflected problems of life in segregation, bad luck, bad luck in love, and all the things that a blues singer/song writer experiences in a lifetime. Sometimes he speaks the words of the song, as he tells his story. Hopkins didn't rehearse his songs; he lived them. He thought everyone should feel the music. He played guitar on a daily basis from the age of 8 on his home-made guitar, to when he went into the studio where he recorded whatever came into his mind. Thank goodness he recorded the music, because it is timeless traditional blues. If you are a blues aficionado, this album is a must have for the record. It’s enjoyable, laid-back, with a little added humor, and hopefully it will aid in keeping the blues alive in America.

If you ever make it to Crockett Texas, be sure to stop by and see the statue erected in his honor, commerating the legendary blues man Lightnin' Hopkins..
