NORTH MISSISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS: BLUES GROUP

North Mississippi Allstars released their 6th studio ablum ‘World Boogie is Coming’ out September 2013. The album was named in memory of the legendary music producer Jim Dickinson. It is a phrase he used often, and his sons Luther and Cody, who formed the North Mississippi Allstars in 1996 are paying tribute to dad, along with R.L.Burnside, whose sons Duwayne & Garry perform on the album as does Sharde Thomas (Vocals, fife) whose grandfather is Otha Turner, all legends of their time.

The Allstars: Southern Rock, Blues Rock, Jam Band, Alt Rock, Mississippi Folk-Blues band had an education in the blues from their parents, and they have turned it into a sound of their own, with swampy rootsy power blues. The rocking duo Luther Dickenson (Counting Crowes lead guitarist on albums 2008-2010) with brother drummer Cody (Hill County Revue) along with Chris Chew, bass put together songs of R.L. Burnside, Otha Turner and Jim Dickinson, and various others. Robert Plant plays Harmonica on tracks one and two, and together they have created a dynamic masterpiece, of old and new music to enjoy.

The band does back-up and tours with John Hiatt. They released an album with him entitled Master of Disaster. All members of the Allstars have teamed up with Robert Randolph and John Medeski to form The Word.

The Grammy nominated band (3 Nominations, previous albums) have opened for Robert Plant (2011) and Dave Matthews (2013)

MAKUA ROTHMAN: SINGER/SONGWRITER

‘Soundwave’ out December 10, 2013

is native Hawaiian Makua Rothman’s latest passion. The 29 year world renowned ‘surfer’ has a new passion, singing and playing his ukulele, creating a sound that is up lifting, and fun that makes you smile and enjoy your day.

Playing the ukulele since he was about 2 years old he is one of the most accomplished players around today, and his voice has a tone that is distinct and uniquely his own. He could be the next Bob Marley of today scattering cheer while pulsating the good nature and congenial hospitality of the Hawaiian people.

Rothman, winner of the 2002 Billabong XXl Big Wave Challenge Award and the 2007 O’Neill World Cup, and viewed by many ESPNer’s for the biggest wipe-outs, has a new direction and music is the where he should be.

The album is number one on iTunes World Music Scene, and sure to move into pop music category once it gets play time.

A simple man, with great passion for big waves and now  music and a sound that speaks volumes for his talent.  I hope you will give him a chance and listen.  Check him out iTunes and Amazon to hear snippets from his album.

AVCII: POP MUSIC

AVCII:  Released his first studio album September 13, 2013, TRUE. You have probably heard it on the radio as they are playing (Wake Me-Up, featuring Aloe Blacc) endlessly.
Tim Bergling is Avcii, the 24 year old from Sweden who has received international recognition as Avicii. Bergling is a DJ, remixer, and record Producer, who uses synthesizers, turn tables, PC’s Macbook Pro and various other electronics to make his productions stand out from the crowd and enlists specific artists to run the vocals. (See list of credit vocal on the album below).
It is amazing the guy is not the performer, he is the performance, the artist that creates the drama, the beat, and gets the masses moving off their feet. It’s a new sound of blended Folk, Dance, Country, Rock, EDM, Techno, and very popular. He has over 186 Million hits on ‘Wake Me Up’ on Youtube and counting. The sound is infectious, and you can’t help singing along or moving to the beat.
From Rollingstone Music:  By Caryn Ganz
September 17, 2013
In March, Avicii made his reverse Dylan-goes-electric move at the EDM-centric Ultra Fest, inviting bluegrass musicians onstage during his set. The crowd was baffled, but the Swede's debut album picks up on this Mumford & Synths sound for a set of folk, soul and addictive house beats. Dan Tyminski of Union Station sings the grand Appalachian stomper "Hey Brother," and Imagine Dragons penned "Heart Upon My Sleeve." True saves room for two funky disco jams featuring banging diva vocals from Audra Mae and Adam Lambert. All of this proves that Avicii's new sound is much more than a page from Moby's Play book.

TYLER HERRING: SINGER/SONGWRITER

Tyler Herring Singer Songwriter and Multi-instrumentalist released his debut album “EMBER” November 5, 2013.

Herring has created a unique sound unlike any other. He blends blues and root music with organic tones using the didgeridoo, drums and acoustic guitar, similar to Australian Xavier Rudd, who he says he was inspired by. The difference is the blend.  Herring’s singing voice is richer and when incorporated with his jazz and blues influences the result is an inimitable sound that is pleasing and uplifting and unique to Herring.

Herring is a one man band, who can captivate an audience with his musicality and hold them by wanting more of his artful creations. Be sure to listen to the links below and enjoy his music on iTunes.

MIKAL CRONIN: SINGER/SONGWRITER

The 1970’s are back with Mikal Cronin’s 2nd studio album “MCII” The 27 year from Laguna Beach, CA, proves his melodic vocals, and scuzz-toned guitar can make beautiful music.

Cronin,  previously associated with Ty Segall, Moonhearts, Epsilions and Okie Dokie is bringing us back around with his creativity moving on from post-grunge to the rock, alternative, and indie rock with ‘Beatleisk undertones and thought provoking lyrics. The music is likable and easy to listen to, with variety, and change of pace.

NPR’s  ‘FIRST LISTEN’  by Stephan Thompson,
Mikal Cronin's second album, MCII, mixes shambling rock with a perfectionist ear with quality control, as its star (who plays most of the instruments himself) applies a beachy sparkle to 37 minutes of fresh, fun rock 'n' roll.

Thematically, MCII focuses on one guy's efforts to process sweeping changes in his life — getting older, moving to a new town, falling into a new relationship — so it makes sense that it feels like the work of a young artist who's both newly grown-up and still growing. But the sneaky sophistication of its pop-rock sound is what really makes the record enduring: Inward-looking but notably less angst-ridden than its predecessor, MCII feels positively stuffed with briskly alluring, summer-ready, California-sunny earworms.

POLICA: ALTERNATIVE ROCK BAND

POLICA
The Indie Pop, Alternative Rock, Synthpop, Trip Hop band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, released their 2nd Studio album SHULAMITH, out October 22, 2013.

The moody melodramatic surreal music is mesmerizing, haunting and appealing to the world-wide market. This group has the promise of success in a huge way. They recently toured with Bon Iver, who has nothing but great things to say about the Minneapolis based band. See the article by Don Hyman of Rolling Stone Magazine:

Shulamith is a reference to radical Canadian Feminist Shulamith Firestone.

Lead singer,  Channy Leaneagh infuses processed vocals, and dark lyrics, with political connotations that make vengeance seem as if it were danceable and charming while pulling you into the music.

Follow this group and see where they are in 2014.

JASON DERULO: SINGER/SONGWRITER

TATTOO (EP) Released 9/24/2013

by JASON DERULO:

The album is danceable, fun, naughty, romantic with all the elements of a good vibration, and way too short, only five songs.

Derulo, (Desrouleaux) is an American artist singer/songwriter, actor, dancer, and boyfriend of singer Jordin Sparks.  He released his first album in 2010, one in 2011, and this EP. Previously he released a couple of singles and keeps his name out there.

Derulo has won recognition with the Teen Choice Awards, and BMI Pop, and is listed on Billborads TOP 100, and he is only 24 years old with a lot of potential, and he is just getting started

With Superb vocal tone if he keeps on trend, he could be the next R. Kelly with the appeal of  the Luther Vandross types of today. He is POP, RnB, Dance,  interesting and exciting.  I want to hear more from him.

1.The Other Side, 2. Talk Dirty (feat: 2 Chainz) 3. Marry Me, 4.Tattoo, 5. Vertigo (feat: Jordin Sparks)

HAIM: ALTERNATIVE ROCK BAND

Haim released their debut album Sep 30, 2013, DAYS ARE GONE, the Indie Pop group from LA consists of sisters Este (27) and Danielle (24)  Haim, past members of the Valli Girls, an all girl rock band  and drummer Dash Hutton, formerly of LA bands, Wires On Fires, and Slang Chicken.
The Nu-Folk-meets-nineties-R&B group, had released a few singles and an EP prior to the release of their debut album.
The Haim girls grew up on 70’s classic rock performing with Mom (Donna) & Dad (Moti) as the ‘Rockinghaim’ at local charities and fairs in the LA area.

A few articles published compare them to Fleetwood Mac, but I don’t hear that at all. Haim has played cover songs of theirs, but the band does not sound like them. They say they were inspired by TLC, & Destinys Child, but again they sound like neither. I think you will be pleased to hear them; good sound, not the typical sound of the auto-tune bands of today. They have far more depth than a lot of groups and they are musically talented, vocally as well as on the guitar. A nice change in music.

Haim, recently won the BBC 'Sound of 2013' Award and were nominated for the
MTV ‘BRAND NEW for 2013’

ARCTIC MONKEYS: INDIE ROCK GROUP

Arctic Monkeys released their 5th Studio album 9/9/2013 in the UK titled “AM”. The album debuted at #1 on the album chart selling 157,000 copies in the first week.

The Group formed in 2002 and recognized as the first group to come to the public attention (Fan based) via the Internet, and have prospered ever since.

The post-punk revival band made it from the Internet in 2002 to the Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2012 in their homeland performing to millions worldwide.

The pounding drums, falsetto harmonies and provoking attitude, are attributed to front man Alex Turner and his vision along with band members Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders.  The ‘Working Class’ band of the people have skeptics wondering if that has changed since their move to Los Angeles, but be assured this band is as compelling as ever, and the album is the best so far.

PASSENGER: SINGER/SONGWRITER

PASSENGER:

Just released his 4th studio album ALL THE LITTLE LIGHTS  to iTunes on 9/28/2013. The album was originally released in Australia and the UK in February 2012.  The Single “Let Her Go” soared to the Number 1 spot in Australia, and Number 2 in the UK.

Michael Rosenberg is Passenger,  a British folk singer/songwriter who founded the band ‘Passenger’. When the band broke up in 2009, he kept the name. Rosenberg went to the streets busking to support himself so he could continue with his music, he has said it paid for the albums he has put out since being on his own. He has a unique sound, something in between James Blunt, and Paolo Nutini, entertaining and a fun folksy sound.

Earlier this year he was the opening act for Ed Sheeran, and has opened for the John Butler Trio and many others.

JONNY LANG: SINGER/MUSICIAN

Jonny Lang
just released his 6th studio album
FIGHT FOR MY SOUL, out on iTunes 9/17/2013.
This album is a new direction and change of pace for Lang from the hard hitting blues he grew up on.  The ‘Kid Jonny Lang’ is all grown up; at the age of 32 he is a husband, and the father of four (1 Boy, 3 Girls).

Lang, primarily a heavy hitting blues guitar slinging player with a gravely voice recorded his first album at the age of 14. As a young kid, Lang toured with the best in the ‘Blues World’ like Buddy Guy, BB King, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and many others.  In 1998 he was nominated for a Grammy for his album WANDER THIS WORLD, at the age of 17, but he didn't win a Grammy until 2006 with his Gospel influenced album TURN AROUND.

This new album is another turn-about from blues and gospel to contemporary
soul/pop rock and I think you will be surprised how good it really is. He released his single from the album  a few weeks ago 'Blew Up' (The House), a good solid rocking song with Lang's guitar finesse. The more I listen to it the more I like it. It is a mature softer side of Lang, sure to win you over.
