BOBBY WOMACK: SINGER/SONGWRITER

‘THE BRAVEST MAN IN THE UNIVERSE’, out June 201, Bobby Womack’s 27th studio album. Now you would think this album would be listed under R&B Soul or Blues, but no, this album is listed in the ‘Electronic’ section if you’re looking for it. Assuming you didn’t know who he was or anything about Bobby Womack.  It has an electronic vibe to it, but it is clearly R&B.  Womack has been a recording artist since the 1950’s, and a hit maker from the 1960’s-1970’s, who keeps reinventing himself to fit the times.

Now at the age of 68 Womack has had his share of up’s and downs.  He started out as part of the Womack Brother’s, a gospel group in the 1950’s. Later they hooked up with the great Sam Cooke who encouraged the brothers to record R&B, under his label SAR, and he renamed the group The Valentino’s. By 1962 they had 10 hits in the top ten on the R&B charts and they were on a roll.  In 1964 Bobby wrote ‘It’s All Over Now’, which the Rolling Stones picked up and recorded the same year and Womack was suddenly a rich man.

After Sam Cooke died December 1964, The Valentio’s were in limbo without the guidance of Cooke.  To make things worse, Bobby married Cooke’s widow just 3 months after his passing, which did not set well with the R&B community and Bobby was no longer getting the gigs he had become accustomed to. To keep his name out there he became a back-up guitar player, for Ray Charles, and Chips Moman, and various others.  At about the same time he was writing songs and became a favorite writer for Wilson Pickett and penned 17 top ten hits for him. He had it goin’ on, but trouble followed.

By the 1970’s drugs were taking over, his brother Harry was murdered by a jealous girlfriend, his marriage had failed and his musical success had waned. In the mid-70’s he had a few R&B hits, but continued with the writing, and wrote for some of the best in the business

He was traded to various recording companies, and in 1979, shortly after the death of his infant son, he came out with a disco album ‘ROADS OF LIFE’, which had mediocre success. From the mid-80’s to this current album he released ten albums with only 2 singles in the top ten, plus a Christmas album.  He took a little time off, in mid 80’s-to  early 90’s. He finally sobered up around the mid-90’s and has been coming back strong and slow.  His voice is a little gravely, but he can still belt a tune, now suffering colon cancer he has given us an album with only one ‘FUNK’ number “Please Forgive My Heart” which says a lot for the man and his music.  You will find a few tracks worth a download, or the entire album if you are a fan of Bobby Womack, regardless of the vocals he knows how to write a good song.

JON LORD: KEYBOARDS/COMPOSER

THE JON LORD BLUES PROJECT LIVE released July 11, 2011, is a live performance album primarily released as a merchandising project sold at Blues Project gigs. Jon Lord , the co-founder of Deep Purple, died of a pulmonary embolism on July 16, 2012 at the age of 71 from complications of pancreatic cancer.
Lord, co-founder and keyboard player of Deep Purple along with Ian Paice, drums, were the constant of the of the group Deep Purple from 1968-1976, and later regrouped in 1984-2002, when Lord retired. They were among the metal pioneers of that era. Lord co-wrote many of the band's songs, including the seminal 'Smoke On The Water' and was responsible for the legendary organ riff on 'Child In Time'.

Jon Lord was a composer, but also renowned for his fusion of rock and classical or baroque forms, he was probably best known for his Orchestral work 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra' first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 & later in 1999.   As a musician, Lord was accomplished on piano and organ and was associated with various groups; Deep Purple,  Whitesnake, Paice, Ashton & Lord, The Artwoods, and  the Flower Pot Men.  His genre was primarily rock, but his roots were blues/blues rock, he also composed classical pieces, and enjoyed classical jazz and jazz fusion. The multi-talented Lord lived his passion of music up until the very end of his life. Hats off to Jon Lord.

MISSY HIGGINS: SINGER/SONGWRITER

Missy Higgins released her 3rd album out June 2012, in Australia ‘The Ole’ Razzle Dazzel’, with a July 17, 2012 release on iTunes in the USA.  This is her third effort to release in the USA.  The first ‘The Sound of White’ in 2004, was a #1 album in Australia, and the 2nd out in 2007 ‘ On A Clear Night’, which produced various singles which were in the top ten, in Australia,  plus she won Best Female Artist award in 2007.
WIKIPEDIA: Higgins has won seven ARIA Music Awards from nineteen nominations.[ She has won two APRA Awards for songwriting and an MTV Australia Video Music Award
§  2004 ARIA Awards, Best Pop Release for "Scar"
§  2005 MTV Australia Video Music Awards, Breakthrough Artist of the Year
§  2005 APRA Awards, Breakthrough Award for "Scar"
§  2005 APRA Awards, Song of the Year for "Scar"
§  2005 ARIA Awards, Breakthrough Artist – Album for The Sound of White
§  2005 ARIA Awards, Best Pop Release for The Sound of White
§  2005 ARIA Awards, Highest Selling Album for The Sound of White
§  2005 ARIA Awards, Best Female Artist for The Sound of White
§  2005 ARIA Awards, Album of the Year for The Sound of White
§  2007 ARIA Awards, Best Female Artist for On a Clear Night

After all that why didn’t she make it here?  She has since changed record labels, and her music is more mature. The pop singer/songwriter has come back with a fresh new look and sound to her music.
In 2008, she quit the business, because it didn’t make her happy, she felt she was on a production line. Although music is what she knows studying classical piano since the age of six, she also plays guitar, and began singing at the age of 12 at public events, she gave it all up to find herself.
All the accolades didn’t bring Higgins what she hoped it would, but she has since found a renewed desire to perform and write again. Her music is passionate; the catchy melodies are revealing and honest, and far superior to her first two albums.
Higgins music, mostly ballads, has been compared to Sarah McLachlan & Vanessa Carlton, with a bit of Atlantis Morissette.

RYAN LERMAN: SINGER/SONGWRITER

Ryan Lerman released his debut album PINSTRIPES, THE SKY, 6/27/2012. The alternative, Indie pop, singer/songwriter from L.A. is a talented, versatile artist, whom releases videos of his songs on YouTube.  Lerman  has been posting his home made videos for a while, and finally put them together for this album.

iTunes list the album by Ry Collins, which may be a pseudonym for Ryan Lerman, or an error.  References to Ry Collins go back to Ryan Lerman, with no explanation. There seems to be a little confusion on who he really is, other than a friend, and bassist of Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five).  The album lists Ryan Lerman as the writer, producer, arranger, performer, mixer and mastering the album. Not much information on the guy, except he is all about social networking with a Twitter account: Twitter.com/rytown, Facebook and MySpace  accounts, and the videos posted on YouTube, and associations with other groups or singers.

Lerman comes up on Wikipedia as an associated act of the group Pomplamoose, (Internet Music Market) which includes Ben Folds, Nately Dawn and a host of others who regularly post on YouTube to get their music out there.

The artist Lerman appears to perform all the instrumentation for his recordings and is not associated with any record label.  He features Ben Folds, on drums & piano (‘Do With You’) and Nately Dawn (‘Baby It’ll Be Alright’) on this album. These 2 tracks make it clear he is a talent to keep on the radar. Not every song is worth the price of a download, most of the album feature ballads, and not catchy enough to be pop, but a couple may make the mainstream. See the videos to decide for yourself.
