RAPHAEL SAADIG: SINGER/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER

Raphael Saadig: Singer/Songwriter/Producer
Raphael, aka: Charles Ray Wiggins, you may remember on Grammy night he was the guy Mick Jagger played off while prancing around the stage. He was the one with the guitar.  Saadig, born and raised in California, is in the world of R&B, Soul, and Rock, flavored with the Motown sound and infused with Hip Hop, Neo Soul. The multi-talented musician, plays the bass guitar, the guitar, and keyboards and is a lead vocalist.
While his personal genre seems to be old school R&B, or traditional R and B, he produces music in all of the fields of music and represents artists in all genres. His name is associated with many well known R&B and Hip-Hop artist and has collaborated with  D’angelo in 2000 & 2001, who won Grammy both years. In all he has 12 Grammy Nominations from 1995-2009 and one win in 2003 for Best R/B Song “Love of My Life (Ode to Hip Hop) sung by Erykah Badu, co-written and produced by him.
The youngest of fourteen children his life had discernible tragedy as a young child. Three of his brothers died, one was murdered, one from a drug overdose and one committed suicide as a result of drug addiction, and one sister was killed in a car crash, during a police chase.  During this time he was playing bass guitar from the age of 6 and he began singing at the age of 9. When he was 18 he went to an audition for Sheila E and ended up on tour with Sheila E and Prince.  Here he was at the age of 18  in Tokyo and touring with some of the world’s most popular entertainers. He refers to it as his university of learning. He toured with Prince & Sheila E for 2 years before moving on.
In the 90’s he changed his name to Raphael Saadig because he wanted his own identity, and didn’t want to be confused with his brother Wayne who is also in the music business. Wayne is the Founder of Tony, Toni, Toné, which Raphael was an original member. Wayne also is the founder Grass Roots Entertainment (Destiny’s Child).  You can see why he wanted to change his name, and have his own identity.
On January 11, 2011 Raphael released a single “Radio”, a Rockn’Roll 50’s style song that received not so favorable reviews, but worth a listen to the upbeat tune.
On February 15, 2011, he released “Good Man”, a 70/80’s style R&B kind of sound. Both of these singles are released from his 5th studio album STONE ROLLIN, to be out sometime in May 2011.
Check out his web-site, he has rehearsal footage with Mick Jagger for the Grammys.

JUNIP: ALTERNATIVE ROCK

JUNIP: ALTERNATIVE ROCK GROUP

Junip , is an alternative soft rock group from Sweden, who just released their latest EP this week IN EVERY DIRECTION  (2/22/2011).
The group consists of  Elias Araya, drums, Tobias Winterhon, organ & synth and Jose Gonzalez, guitar and vocals.  A diverse group with varying backgrounds, as Jose is of Argentine decent, born in Sweden, with Latin folk music exposure,  and Araya’s mother from Ethiopia exposed him to the repetitive Afro-beats, which they have incorporated into their sound. Jose & Elias have been together since they were 14 years old.
The overall effect is a pleasing hushed rock in a  mellow lo-fi spectrum. They refer to their music as hazy, organic, melodic & hypnotic with the unconventional blend of influences.  It is almost as if they were singing in a tunnel and sound echo’s back, but in a soft subtle hushed tone.
They have one previous studio album FIELDS, 2010, and two previous releases of EPs BLACK REFUGE, 2005 & ROPE & SUMMIT, 2010.
Jose Gonzalez, has two solo albums previously in 2003 VENEER, and 2007 IN OUR NATURE . His delicately sung tones & mysterious lyricism, make him matchless in the age of loud and over produced sounds of today.
It is hard to tell how they will fare in the US with their soft sound. The sound is not big enough to get the attention of the media, and is not unique to the US. The sound has been done before, but they have a little different spin on it with the diversity they bring.  If you were asked if you would take it or leave it, you would probably leave it. The niche for them may be limited to a short period of time before moving to something else. Call it trendy for the moment.

ADELE: SINGER/SONGWRITER

ADELE: SINGER/SONGWRITER

Just out today 2/22/2011: 21 by Adele her second album and a sure winner. Already the first single out February 1, 2011 in the US “Rolling In The Deep”, is a hit. We will probably hear it over and over again into the next year. (You may have seen her sing this song on Dave Letterman last night 2.21.2011, he loved her) The album was released in the UK and throughout Europe in January to great reviews, and chart toppers.
With the current surge of female British singers/songwriters, (Sia, Florence Welsh, LaRoux, and Various others)  Adele Laurie Blue Adkins by far has the most identifiable voice. She is not a gimmick, a sex symbol, she is a singer/songwriter with a powerful voice. As soon as she opens her mouth you know it is Adele.  She does not sound like all the rest of the girls out there who seem to try to one-up each other by their outrageous/skimpy costumes, and antics that bring attention to their limited talent, she don't have to, because she has a talent that's not comparable.
The English pop, soul, jazz, blues singer/songwriter  became a nearly overnight sensation when friends posted 3 demo’s on MySpace, as a class project, and shortly after she was offered a record label, and her first album 19 was out in 2008.
A former class-mate of Leona Lewis, Adele originally planned on a career as an agent helping launch careers of other artist. Thankfully her classmates could identify a unique talent when they heard her sing.
In 2009 Adele won a Grammy for Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She was also nominated for record of the year from her first Album, 19 and song of the Year, “Chasing Pavements”
In 2010 Adele was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, for “Hometown Glory”, Beyoncé took the honors for Halo.  She no doubt will be in the running for the 2012 Grammys with her current album 21.
We have not heard the last of this girl, at 21, two albums in,  she has just begun her career in the music industry and we can expect great things to come.
Other Songs on the Album you may enjoy:  “Rumor Has It”, “He Won’t Go”, “Set Fire To The Rain”, and “Someone Like You”. Anyone of these could be record of the year.  Check them out on iTunes.

DONELL JONES: SINGER/SONGWRITER

DONELL JONES:  SINGER/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER/MUSICIAN
In September 2010, Donell Jones released his 6th Album LYRICS.
The American R/B Soul Singer is classified as Spinto Tenor, which means he has a wide range of flexibility in his vocals. Technically he could be an opera singer, if trained properly.  With his excellent voice, he delivers a familiar smooth sexy R/B soul sound.
A former gang member from Chicago’s south side and father of 5 girls, the singer/songwriter made the right career choice when he moved away from the gang activity and focused his energy on his music. He wrote “Think of You” for Usher, he has produced for Madonna, and various other artist, both writing and producing music.  He is following in the footsteps of such notables as Babyface, and R. Kelly and he is making important contributions to R/B Music.
With 18 singles to his credit, this album is not as fabulous as it should be with his voice and range, but it does have some down loadable tunes:
“Blackmail” “Imagine That”, “The Finer Things in Life”, “Just a little”, and “Love Like This”, which was released as a single in August 2010. We are guaranteed to hear more great things from him in the future, in the form of writing, producing and performing.

FLORENCE & THE MACHINE: MUSIC GROUP

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
Florence Welsh of Camberwell London and her band the Machine are an alternative rock group that made their début album in 2009. Their first album out LUNGS, has received much attention, especially in the UK, and now in the US.
You may recall Florence as a member of the group of women who paid tribute to Aretha Franklin at the opening of the Grammy Awards February 2011. That was a great example of her vocal range.  Her album does not showcase her voice as it did in the tribute. She has more of a group vocal sound.
She is kind of eccentric/quirky, kind of alternative rock, alternative soul, baroque rock, and art rock, and endearing.  See definition from Wikipedia below:
Baroque pop, baroque rock or English baroque, often used interchangeably with chamber pop/rock, is a style of music originated in the mid-1960s that brought elements of classical music into the writing and recording of rock 'n' roll songs.
Not to be confused with Rock art.
Art rock is a term describing a subgenre of rock music that tends to have "experimental or avant-garde influences" and emphasizes "novel sonic texture." Art rock is an "intrinsically album-based" form, which takes "advantage of the format's capacity for longer, more complex compositions and extended instrumental explorations
LUNGS,  was released in early July 2009, and from that she has released singles “Additied To Love”  released June 2010, originally written by Robert Palmer back in 1986, and “Dog Days are Over” out  in October 2010.
They were nominated for Grammy 2011 for Best New Artist, but lost to Esperanza Spalding. They did win an MTV award for the video “Dog Days Are Over” 2010, and have many nominations and awards from The United Kingdom.
Songs of interest not previously mentioned: “You’ve Got The Love”, “Kiss With A Fist”, “Cosmic Love’, and a catchy little tune called, “My Boyfriend Builds Coffins” .
Fans of Florence and the Machine, think the group is charming, energizing and can captivate an audience. Florence promises the next album due out in 2011, will be an eclectic mix of styles and less dark.  Check out Florence and The Machine at:    http://florenceandthemachine.net/

DRIVE BY TRUCKERS: MUSIC GROUP

The Drive by Truckers recently released their 9th studio album 2.15.2011 to mixed reviews.
GO-GO-BOOTS from the alternative country, alternative rock, cowpunk southern rock group formed in 1996, is more ballads than rock.
Three of the six members of the band are from The Shoals, a band out of Alabama, now disbanded.  The Drive By Truckers are a swinging door type of group with members coming and going, yet they have managed to release many singles along the way with the latest being “Used To Be A Cop”, and previously “Thanksgiving Filter”
The Album is quirky, funny, country, and country soul.  They claim they are embracing the music of the original hometown area of Muscle Shoals, AL.
“I Hear You Hummin” is only available on the vinyl version of this album. More impressive are there album covers by Wes Freed, musician, artist and illustrator. His album covers and celebrity portraits are in high demand.
Previous albums are more bar-room rock, and crying in your beer kind of stuff. They have matured and are doing more somewhat poignant music, to the dismay of the country rock fans.  “Cartoon Gold” is a hoot with mention of dog shit on the floor while this guys bringing flowers to his girl. “Dancin Ricky” features, Shonna Tucker, bassist on vocals, with a very distinctive voice.
They tell stories with their songs like:  “Rays Automatic Weapon” and “Your Women is a Livin Thing”. They also have included a Percy Sledge number “When A Man Loves A Women”
All n’ all an interesting and different sound/take on country and you will probably need to develop an acquired taste for their alternative, southern country style.

GRAMMY'S 2011 LIVE PERFORMANCES REVIEW:

GRAMMY'S 2011 LIVE PERFORMANCES REVIEW:
After getting back and unwinding from probably the best Grammy show ever, it is time to reflect on what we have just seen/heard.  It was about the artist and not the awards this year. The majority of the Grammys were announced earlier in the day, and only a handful of Grammy’s were awarded during the evening. It was entertaining and exciting to watch artist perform who we don’t normally get to see live.
The evening started off with an Opening Tribute to Aretha Franklin, recently diagnosed with cancer and not able to attend, but posted a taped message of appreciation. The medley was performed by:
Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Jennifer Hudson and Florence Welsh of Florence and the Machine, and what a performance they gave, these girls can sing! They sang the songs that made Aretha a Grammy winner super star. The Surprise was Martina McBride, a country singer/songwriter, who hung in with the powerful voices of the girls who are known for belting out a tune, she did hold her own, and very well at that.  I am sure Aretha was proud of all of their performances.
Lady Antebellum paid Tribute to Teddy Pendergrass, who died January 2010. Unfortunately, they only sang one of his songs. “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”. Not really a tribute, more of an acknowledgement, that moved them into their songs “American Honey”, and “Need You Now”. The later won 3 Grammy’s and the most coveted Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Country Album. After a slow start their harmonies were right on and as beautiful as ever.
Lady Gaga, a hatchling emerging from her big plastic egg, performed “Born This Way”, in the style and drama we expect from her, reminiscent of a Madonna performance. Her voice was flawless, and the dancing was sexy, with impeccable timing, and the costumes like the skin of a newborn babe. The perfectionist had everything going for her, and her earlier grand entrance had everyone buzzing with anticipation before she crawled out the egg she arrived in. Lady Gaga Won Best Pop Vocal Album for THE FAME MONSTER.
Miranda Lambert, performed her song that won the Best Female Vocal Performance for her “The House that Built Me”, She was a bit pitchy in the beginning, and after following Lady Gaga, maybe her confidence was frayed, but in the end she did a nice job and country fans loved her.
John Mayer, Norah Jones and Keith Urban, paid Tribute to Dolly Parton, who received the Life Time Achievement Award. They sang “Jolene” by Parton. Norah and Keith did great jobs, but Mayer was somewhat off, or just out of his element.  The guy is just unlovable.  For such a hefty award little time was spent paying a tribute to Dolly
Katy Perry, for a minute it looked like she may try something like Pinks’ Trapeze act when she came out singing on a swing, (didn’t your Mama ever tell you to keep your knees together?) “It’s Not Like the Movies” which was ok, a little slow, but once she got off the swing she wanted to salute all the Valentines Lovers and got right into “Teenage Dream” that was upbeat and rocked the song and had the audience singing along with her. Nice performance for the 4 time Grammy nominee.
Bruno Mars, B.o.B, and Janelle Monae, begin the montage with “Nutin on You”, featuring B.o.B and Bruno Mars, both were slightly off-key, but the musicians  kept it together, and it had an overall feel that it worked, but they both struggled with the notes. They switched it up and did a retro R&B version of “Grenade”, and again Bruno, was off-key and his voice sounded as if it were cracking and not very strong in a few parts, but again the musicians had it rockin. From there Bruno, took over the drums, and B.o.B to the guitar for Janelle Monae, an up and coming new artists sang “Cold War”  which was rocking, but her voice waivered a bit , until she was able to pull it off and the crowd seemed to appreciate their efforts.
Justin Bieber, Usher, and Jayden Smith. The set begins with Justin playing the Acoustic guitar, for just a few minutes, and the change up begins with a drum core, getting the beat going before Justin gets into “Never Say Never” with bright lights flashing and acrobatic dancers filling the stage and the young singer strutted his stuff moving around the stage and finally ending in a dance routine, when Jayden Smith popped up on the stage and did a little rap interlude, while taking advantage of the big stage. They end back to back, arms crossed the light dims and Usher’s gravelly voice “Oh My God" is heard in the dim light, the lights begin flashing, the stage becomes electrified and the crowd went crazy. Usher’s vocals and moves had the crowds roaring the entire time, and it ends with Justin popping back onto the stage doing a little synchronized dancing routine and added vocal for the grand finale. It was a tremendous hit with the crowd and a great performance by all.
Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, & Bob Dylan, Mumford & Sons, started out the set and performed “The Care” an Acoustic tribute, and did a bang up job, vocally and instrumentally. They were upbeat, lively and engaging. The Avett Brothers performed “Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise” with great vocals, and truly seemed to enjoy being their singing and playing their instruments with smiles on their faces. Bob Dylan came out singing "Maggie’s Farm", his voice scratchier, and even raspier with years of singing/performing. He will be 70 yrs. young June 2011 and is still relevant. While he sang both groups were in the back ground playing banjo, guitar and base, and nearly drowned him out, but what you could hear sounded just as current as they were, and he even had a little smile on his face, OMG!  An excellent over-all-lively performance and they all truly seemed to enjoy doing what they do.
Adam Levin, Eminem, Rhinna, Dr. Dre and  Skylar Grey,  Adam Levin’s role was only at the piano when Rhinna took the lead with her “Love the Way You Lie”
Adam, was never to be seen again. Rhinna’s performance was stunning, with the fire burning in the background, and the emotion which she sang, you could imagine the pain of the song lyrics/title. As the flames rose higher in the back ground Eminem took center stage and infused his anger toward women in an emotional vein popping rap. Rhinna came from stage 2 to join him on the main stage singing the chorus, as Eminem rapped, she did an exit stage left. The song transitioned as Skylar Grey took on the female role with strong and poignant vocals singing “I need a Doctor”, Dr. Dre joined them and rapped with Eminem in sync, and the crowd went crazy for the performances. The highly anticipated  performance was powerful and while the content was painful, and the message is not favorable to women, they somehow have made rage & violence against women artful and acceptable in the music world, with a few added bleeps.
Muse, the British rock band, with Mathew Bellamy lead singer, brought down the house with a strong and exciting performance and winner of the Best Rock Album. When the winner was announced they received a warm polite applause which seemed kind of cool after the outstanding performance the crowd acknowledged earlier.
Cee Lo Green & Gwyenth Paltrow, performed Cee Lo’s F***You! The colorful Cee Lo, was adorned in bright colored feathers & a beaded/metal head piece and was just plain out there. Move over Elton John, Madonna, and Lady Gaga, we have a new drama queen in town. His voice was crisp and the Muppets Puppets were charming and added more color and whimsy to a fun song. Gwyenth came out singing in a slinky skin tight jump suit, and did a very nice job of “Forget You”, same song, just a come clean version and slithered onto the piano, to perform the duet with Cee Lo. They both did a great job. Fun, good performance! A crowd pleaser.
Rihanna and Drake,  singing “What’s My Name” starts out with Drake rapping, which was slow and not feelin it kind of start but once Rhinna begin to gyrate and shake her bootie Shakira style, and rub up against him,  his rap became more prominent in the number. Rhinna let loose with a few steamy Beyonce moves, and her dance troop like the Havana Revue, gyrated to the music and the flames grew higher as the sultry number came to a climax.
Barbra Streisand, sang “Ever Green”, from a Star is Born. Not sure people got it that the song was a Grammy Winner, and Oscar Winner for the movie, starring Barbra and Kris Kristofferson, who introduced her.  She did a great job, and sounded as good as she did when she made the movie, which was a re-make, and is a possible remake coming, with CLint Eastwood producing and Beyonce as the lead.
Mick Jagger and Raphael Saadiq, it was Mick’s first time as a Grammy performer, and he stole the show at age 67, while he strutted his skinny little ass like a peacock, in that tiny green tuxedo jacket.  He skipped, he jumped, he ran the stage like a marathon, all the while singing Solomon Burkes “I Need You” as a tribute to the late singer/songwriter. Raphael, was brought into the spot light as Mick played off him, by pushing him back, and encouraging the guitar man, singer/songwriter, producer in a playful and action packed medley of fast paced high-stepping movements. The crowd was on their feet from the moment Mick opened the act stage center in a cape, James Brown fashion, and as flamboyant as Solomon Burke really was. Truly one of the surprising highlights of the evening and one that will be remembered by all for years to come, and a prime example of how relevant a person of his age really is, and an attainable example to be as alive as his performance was.
Arcade Fire,  the big winner of the night for Album of the year, the Canadian Alternative Rock group, took the stage performing  “Month of May” from the album The Suburbs,   with strobe lights flashing, and stunt bikes peddling in  circles, it was confusing, but it was the Grammy’s and over the top sells. When the winner of the Record of The Year was announced the crowd seemed stunned, yet polite, that the alternative group won top honors. They said their Thank you’s and went back to the stage and played a less dramatic rendition of  the song to end the evening.

DURAN DURAN: POP ROCK/ALTERNATIVE GROUP

Duran Duran: Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, Synthpop, New Wave Group

Duran Duran, is a well known English rock group that became popular back in 1978. They just released their 13th studio album out in December 2010 ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS NOW.  You may have seen them on VH1 or MTV Video doing the song by the same name recently, and frequently.
The band has 2 Grammy's (1984), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1993), and an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award for Video (2003), and various other awards and acknowledgements.
Simon LeBon’s vocals are strong and sound very today. The CD includes the Electro Dance, Synthpop type of music like so many others are doing right now. This is what sells kind of music and the party/club songs/sound, are combined with typical Duran Duran 80’s sound and retro fit into another decade.
The new album is OK and they do make the 80’s seem like today and the Duran Duran die hard fans love it, and that’s what counts, but their previous album RED CARPET MASSACRE out in 2007 was much better.
A couple of songs sound like the last one, but songs of note are: “All You Need Is Now”, “Girl Panic” (so 80’s) “Before The Rain”, and maybe one or two others.
You have to give them credit for hanging in there for over 30 years, and making their sound seem like it was made for today.

JAMES BLAKE: COMPOSER/ SINGER

James Blake:  Composer/Singer
You can clearly see this is not the James Blake who is the10th ranked tennis player in the world, or one of People’s Magazine Sexiest Man Alive.

This is James Blake from the UK, and the BBC’s Sound 2011, #2 most promising new artist of the year.
His genre is Dubstep (tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals per Wikipedia), Minimal Ambient, (also From Wikipedia, Ambient music is a genre that focuses largely on timbral characteristics of sounds, often organized or performed evoke an "atmospheric”, “visual" or "unobtrusive" quality), and Electronic.
These are genre terms we will be hearing more of if the BBC is correct.  We have electronic dance music, but this is not really danceable.  It is more the type of music you listen to while smoking a joint in a smoke filled room with friends sprawled about, and maybe a blue light. Warning; do not listen to this type of music while you are alone in the dark.
James started out playing the piano by the age 5/6 and knew early on music was his forté.  You can hear the piano on most of tracks, but you also hear auto tuned screechy, and eerie vocals. Very seldom do you hear  melodious soothing sounds from him. It is hard to decide if he can really sing, or if it's his techno savvy that you hear.
The electric club music is what he enjoys, bringing the music to his fans. He put out four EP’s to get attention and raise his profile in 2010, before he released his first Solo Album out February 7, 2011 with arrangements like:  “The Wilhelm Scream”, “I Never Learnt to Share”, and the most popular “Limit To Your Love”, which he does sing a few words, and “Don’t You Think I do”, which starts out with sounds like the cat trying to puke up a hairball, techno enhanced that is.
Much of it seems like overproduced sound effects, sometime loud, that have been described as haunting, and uplifting, if that’s possible in the same song. Others have described it as melodic nonsense, but melodic is not really part of this genre.
If at all curious check him out, the promised future of music.
