2011 GRAMMY BEST TRADITIONAL POP VOCAL ALBUM

2011 Grammy:  Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album

Nominees: Album/Artist

  1. Crazy Love:  Michael Bublé
  2. The Greatest Love Songs of All Time:  Barry Manilow
  3. Let it Be Me: Mathis in Nashville:  Johnny Mathis
  4. Fly Me To The Moon…The Great American Songbook: Volume  V     Rod Stewart
  5. Love Is The Answer:  Barbra Streisand

Michael Bublé:  Probably the front runner in this category. He offers upbeat tempos, plus a hit tune “Haven’t Met You Yet” in his album.  The crooner demonstrates his ability to sing the greats and make them current with a bit of  flare.  This CD is more relatable to more than a few generations.

Barry Manilow:  All the songs are past hits from several generations. It is solid, romantic, soft and slow, and maybe not for everyone.  While the songs are familiar, and should not be forgotten, I came away with a feeling that it was nice, but not what I am looking for.

Johnny Mathis: Again the unforgettable sound of Johnny Mathis. This particular CD is similar to the Manilow CD, with duplicated songs, and the same soft, slow, romantic feeling about it, but with a little more swagger than Manilow and a tiny touch of country.

Rod Stewart:  His 5th Album of oldies, and no one can do the series better in my book. He makes old songs sound new. When he sings the greats, his hips are swaying, and his toe is tapping, and you know he loves what he is doing. He makes the songs seem sexy and just for you.  He is a master at his art, and that raspy voice is undeniably Rod Stewart.

Barbra Streisand: Another, slow melodious sounding CD with love songs of the past.  She does a good job as always, there is no denying her voice is still  strong and relevant, but again heard it before. They seem like the same old songs.

While these artists are winners, famous for what they do best and I do believe they have demonstrated their best qualities in the nominated CD’s, but only Michael Bublé and Rod Stewart have made the old seem new and relevant again.
