The Drive by Truckers recently released their 9th studio album 2.15.2011 to mixed reviews.
GO-GO-BOOTS from the alternative country, alternative rock, cowpunk southern rock group formed in 1996, is more ballads than rock.
Three of the six members of the band are from The Shoals, a band out of Alabama, now disbanded. The Drive By Truckers are a swinging door type of group with members coming and going, yet they have managed to release many singles along the way with the latest being “Used To Be A Cop”, and previously “Thanksgiving Filter”
The Album is quirky, funny, country, and country soul. They claim they are embracing the music of the original hometown area of Muscle Shoals, AL.
“I Hear You Hummin” is only available on the vinyl version of this album. More impressive are there album covers by Wes Freed, musician, artist and illustrator. His album covers and celebrity portraits are in high demand.
Previous albums are more bar-room rock, and crying in your beer kind of stuff. They have matured and are doing more somewhat poignant music, to the dismay of the country rock fans. “Cartoon Gold” is a hoot with mention of dog shit on the floor while this guys bringing flowers to his girl. “Dancin Ricky” features, Shonna Tucker, bassist on vocals, with a very distinctive voice.
They tell stories with their songs like: “Rays Automatic Weapon” and “Your Women is a Livin Thing”. They also have included a Percy Sledge number “When A Man Loves A Women”
All n’ all an interesting and different sound/take on country and you will probably need to develop an acquired taste for their alternative, southern country style.
